History

The official history of West Reading dates back to 1873, when the area was settled and founded. Before 1873, the land was inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Indians, who utilized the nearby Schuylkill River to sustain their lifestyle. Once the town was founded, it began to progress when large factories opened, including the notable Alexander Hat Factory. The town underwent construction from 1877-1884 when the Lebanon Valley Railroad bridge was torn down during a riot, and the Penn Street Bridge was constructed in its place. The town was later incorporated as a borough in 1907 and had its first public election at John Kintzer's public house. West Reading High School opened (1914) in the years following, and the town's largest manufacturer, Narrow Fabric Co., opened. By 1923, the first police station opened, consisting of one police officer. Through the mid-1900s, West Reading continued to develop and became the largest borough in the county. In the latter 1900s, the Main Street project was planned for revitalization allowing for more neighborhood progression. Today, West Reading is a fully developed neighborhood ideal for young professionals promising even further development.
