Eastmont is a neighborhood in Wilkins Township, a minor civil division of Allegheny County in Pennsylvania. The neighborhood belongs to ZIP code 15235 and appears on the Braddock U.S. Geological Survey Map.

History of the Township

The Wilkins Township was named after William Wilkins (1779-1865), an American judge and politician who served as a Jacksonian member of the United States Senate from 1831-1834. On November 10th, 1821, the township was created from the eastern part of Pitt Township as a political subdivision of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

The township's territory was originally between the Allegheny and Monogahela rivers and has since been developed into multiple municipalities between Pittsburgh, Plum, and Monroeville.

The entirety of the township spans 2.75 square miles, entirely composed of land. The southeastern border of the township is denoted by Thompson Run, a tributary of Turtle Creek, which is just 10 minutes away from Eastmont. The entire township lies within the Turtle Creek Watershed, a 21.1-mile-long tributary of the Monongahela River.

Edgewood Country Club

For those looking to connect with community members in a more private setting, just 5 minutes away from the heart of Eastmont is the Edgewood Country Club. The country club has been a beloved location for community members since 1922 when the club made its final move to its current location on Churchill Road.

At the time, the 167 acres was purchased for $40,000, and Donald Ross began designing one of his 500 world-renowned golf courses. On July 4th, 1922, the New Course opened, and the club consisted of 503 members, 400 of whom were active subscribers.

Since the new location opened, the country club has had a few monumental moments including,

  • 1954 – First Annual Men’s Invitational played.
  • 1959 – First Mixed Invitational played.
  • 1964 – On January 28th, the dining room in the new Clubhouse opened. Then on January 29th,
a devastating fire broke out, destroying the old clubhouse.
  • 1988 – The entire Clubhouse was renovated.
  • 1994 – The Clubhouse was redesigned to today’s current look.
  • 1998 – Edgewood celebrated its Centennial Clubhouse renovation.
  • 2017 – Final construction of holes #10 and #18 were completed. Improvements to the course successfully redesigned the course in the spirit of the original Donald Ross design.
  • 2019 – The Clubhouse Ballroom was remodeled during the off-season. The renovation included new carpet, paint, wallpaper, and chandeliers.

The country club remains a great part of the area's history and continues to be utilized and beloved by community members today.
