Aston is a township in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. The area is within Zip Code 19014 and holds a total population of 16,592 with a population density of 2,859.64/ square mile. Aston’s current boundaries were established in 1945 when the northwestern portion of the township seceded to form the borough of Chester Heights.
In 1682, Aston was first settled as a municipality and then incorporated into one of Pennsylvania’s first townships in 1688. Before 1687, Aston was commonly known as Northley until Edward Carter, who was the constable of the township, changed the name from Northley to Aston. Carter did so in remembrance of his old home of Aston in Oxfordshire, England. By 1906, Aston became a first-class township.
During colonial times, Concord Road was the main road between Chadds Ford on Brandywine Creek and Chester, Pennsylvania. The Seven Stars Inn, located at Concord Road's ‘Five Points’ intersection, served as overnight quarters for British General Cornwallis on September 13, 1777, just two days after the Battle of the Brandywine.
Today, Aston hold a veteran memorial dedicated to all the veteran who lived in the township from the American Revolution to present day. The memorial also serves to honor Aston Township EMT, police, and firefighters killed in the line of duty.
The township population shows a wide age range. The population is composed of 22.8% residents under the age of 18, 10.0% from 18- 24, 28.1% from 25- 44, 24.4% from 45 - 64, and 14.8% who are 65+.The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. Additionally, for every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.3 males. The racial makeup of the township shows greater levels of homogeneity with a population that is 94.3% White, 2.8% African American, 0.1% Native American, 1.6% Asian, 0.3% from other races, and 0.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.6% of the population.
There is a strong presence of families within Aston. From the 2010 U.S. Census, we can see that Aston holds 5,838 households, out of which 31.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.1% are married couples living together, 8.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.6% are non-families. The average household size was 2.66, and the average family size was 3.15.
