Exton is a census-designated place in West Whiteland Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. The total area spans 3.2 square miles and is home to an approximate population of 5,382.

Exton stands at the intersection of U.S. Route 30, formerly known as Lancaster Road, and Pennsylvania Route 100. A the beginning of the late 18th century, the Lancaster Road became an important transportation route between Philadelphia and West Philadelphia. At the time, Route 100 was a regional north-south route to Pottstown, a borough in Montgomery County.

Local legend tells that the 'X' in Exton stands for its intersection location on the map. However, it's more likely that the area was named after one of the several Extons in the United Kingdom.

In the 1940s, Exton became home to the Newcomen Society of the United States, a non-profit educational foundation for "the study and recognition of achievement in American business and the society it serves."

The organization is responsible for more than 1,600 individual histories of organizations, which were distributed to libraries and memberships.

The campus of the society was built overlooking farmland on Newcomen Road, hence the organization's name. The campus featured a printing shop, offices, a library, guest houses, a chapel, and a museum. While the organization sold its property in the late 1990s, the campus remains an Exton landmark.

Exton has gone through transformative measures. From being known as a railroad town to a well-landscaped area with comfortable homes, Exton has seen various elements of development.

The Exton Square Mall, built by The Rouse Company and opened in March 1973, was the catalyst for rapid growth in the West Whiteland township. Following the mall opening, the area's population increased 7,900 in 1973 to over 16,000 by 2000.

Since Exton Square Mall opening its door in 1973, the shopping center has expanded its stores and food services. The mall's success led to the opening of many other shopping centers and parks in the township.

The mall became so popular that the West Whiteland Township Police Department was created to patrol the township since the public demand from the mall would be too much for the Pennsylvania State Police to handle.
