The neighborhood was named "Ashton Woodenbridge" in the 1970s to honor the Ashton family, who were early settlers in 1653, before William Penn.
Until the 1854 Act of Consolidation, the area was part of one of the original townships, Lower Dublin Township. The Sct of Consolidation incorporated the area into the greater city of Philadelphia.
Thomas Holmes, upon his death, emancipated his slaves, and many of the descendants owe land in the area. Church located on Ashton Road and the oldest African American church.
In the 1960s, the area still showed similar to its farmland roots, active farms surrounded the area, and horse-drawn carriages frequently served as local transit during the cold weather seasons. The carriages mainly worked to transport workers from the steep Ashton Road to the bus stop in Holmes Circle.
Today, the Joseph Ashton Farms is now called the Torresdale Filter Plant, and the area is still served by the freight railroad.
