Penn Valley is an unincorporated community in the Lower Merion Township of Pennsylvania. The area was first settled in 1682 by Welsh Quakers. In 1713, it was incorporated as a township. Two centuries later, the areas of Fairview, Crow's and Bowler's Woods, within the township, were merged and incorporated as Penn Valley in 1930.
In the beginning, Penn Valley was a farming community known for Penshurst, Percival Robert's 539-acre dairy farm. In 1939, after the 75-room Penshurst mansion was demolished for residential development, the area grew more suburban. As of the 2010 census, the community has less than 4,000 residents.
Penn Valley Women's Club is a historic building in Penn Valley. Constructed between 1826 and 1828 by nearby farmers, it served as a schoolhouse and Sunday meetinghouse. In 1876, the club moved to a new building. However, it was razed around 1926. The remains of the building can be seen on Fairview Road. In 1951, the original club building was repaired. It was designated as a historic suite in 1978 by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC). Today, the historic building serves as the home of The Penn Valley Civic Association.
Penn Valley Elementary School is the 3rd best public elementary school in Montgomery County. The above average elementary school has a population of 688 students in grades Kindergarten through 5th. Its student-to-teacher ratio is 13 to 1. Based on state test scores, 87% of its students are at least proficient in reading and 81% are in math. The school has a GreatSchools rating of 7 out of 10 and an overall Niche grade of an A-plus. It is part of the Lower Merion School District and can be found on Righters Mill Road.
Welsh Valley Middle School is the middle school that serves most of the 6th through 8th grade students in Penn Valley. Located on Tower Lane, it has a population of 1,060 students, most of whom are coming from Penn Valley Elementary School. The top rated school is the 11th best public middle school in Pennsylvania, according to Niche.com. Based on state test scores, 84%. of its students are proficient in reading and 72% are in math. The middle school has an overall Niche grade of an A-plus and a GreatSchools rating of 5 out of 10.
General Wayne Park is a local park on Maplewood Avenue. Providing a recreational space for residents in Penn Valley and its surrounding neighborhoods, the park features amenities like a baseball field, softball field, basketball court, volleyball court, tennis courts with pickleball lines, children's playground, tot lot, comfort station and picnic tables. During the winter months, the 18-acre park also offers the perfecting sledding area. Managed by the Lower Merion Township Department of Parks and Recreation, it is open every day from 6 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
