Walnuttown

The town of Walnuttown is a census-designated place, or CDP, situated in the central region of Berks County, Pennsylvania. Willow Creek flows through the community. The main roadways are Pleasant Hill Road, Park Road, and Crisscross Road. Some of the nearby neighborhoods include Fleetwood, Breezy Corner, Blandon, and Moselem Springs. 

History

According to a publication from 1886, the town was named after a cluster of walnut trees growing within its borders.

One of the town's prominent families who settled in its early years was the Rothermel's. This large and influential family descended from John Rothermel, who was born in Wachbach, Holland, in 1688.

Rothermel and his wife, Sybilla Zimmerman, had six children before they left Rotterdam in 1730 on a ship heading to America. Unfortunately, John died during the trip, but his family arrived in August of 1730. One daughter, Anna Maria, settled with her husband, Peter Fetherolf, in Macungie. The sons settled in Berks and included:

  • Paul
  • Peter
  • John
  • Christian

Another descendant, Abraham H. Rothermel, became a Berks County district attorney. Except for one, Rothermel's paternal relatives who came to America were buried in the Rothermel family cemetery located in town.

Neighborhood

This rural neighborhood is mainly made up of medium-size homes built between 1970 and 1999. However, a few were built as early as 1940. The typical home price is $228,076, and rental costs average $1,187 per month.

Demographics

As many as 12.8% of the residents above the age of five primarily speak German or Yiddish at home. However, English is the language mainly spoken by the townspeople. The following is a breakdown of the ancestries found within the community:
