About Wister

Wister is a pleasant neighborhood in Northwest Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The town is neighbored by East Germantown, Penn-Knox, and Ogontz. A significant portion of Wister is occupied by the LaSalle University campus bringing a youthful demographic. Wister is a unique town with an urban-suburban mix featuring several restaurants, parks, and shops within a residential area.

Historic Locations

Being a prominent college town, many of Wister's notable locations are within LaSalle University's campus. Just a short walk away from one another, Wister hosts two historical locations that are certainly worth a visit. Luckily, since the locations are within such close distance, you can tackle them both in one day. The first historic site is the Charles Willson Peale House, also known as Belfield. The home was built in 1755 and designed in the Dutch Colonial architectural style. The home belonged to painter, scientist, and politician Charles Willson Peale between 1810 and 1826. Peale purchased the property in 1810 to transform the land into a small country estate after he granted his natural history museum to his son Rubens Peale. Charles Peale contracted yellow fever and soon after sold the property to William Logan Fisher in 1826. The home was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966 and now belongs to LaSalle University's campus.

Just across the road from the historic home is the La Salle University Art Museum. LaSalle University opened the museum to expand further the education of its students and the general public. The museum began in 1965 with a small collection founded by Daniel Burke but has grown throughout the years. Today, the museum features a core collection of 350 paintings, 500 drawings, 175 photographs, and artifacts from the Renaissance throughout several period rooms. While the museum mainly focuses on Western art, there is a significant contributionHistoric Architecture of Japanese Ukiyo-e and modern prints dating back to the 19th century. The museum is open to the public and is certainly a must-see for all Wister visitors.

Neighborhood Parks

Wister is a great neighborhood with lots of local attractions. In addition to its historic locations, Wister is the site of several neighborhood parks. Members of the community thoroughly enjoy using the green spaces for casual gatherings, and children within the town often occupy the neighborhood playground. If you are looking to become acquainted with the community, be sure to visit Wister Woods Park, Wister Playground, Wakefield Park, and Kemble Park. The well-maintained parks offer convenient basketball courts, picnic areas, playsets, and open green spaces.
