The Marshallton historic district spans 102 acres with 65 contributing buildings and 3 historic sites. The district's contributing buildings largely represent the Mid 19th Century Revival, Colonial and, Federal architectural styles. The Marshallton historic district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.

Historic Landmarks

The Marshallton historic district is a stunning area ideal for history buffs. The well-maintained community is home to several historical buildings that are now mostly privately-owned. Some of the most noteworthy landmarks within the district are the Humphrey Marshall House and the Bradford Friends Meeting House.

The Humphrey Marshall House is a historic property within the district that has been commonly referred to as Marshall's Arboretum, the Botany Farm, and Marshall's Garden. The grand home sits was built from 1773-1774 upon a 2.5-acre property. The home was constructed in the Georgian architectural style and belonged to notable botanist, Humphrey Marshall who established one of the first botanical gardens in the United States. The 2.5 story home is surrounded by beautiful gardens and is notable for incorporating locally sourced limestone. The home was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.

Also within the district is the Bradford Friends Meeting House, previously referred to as the Marshallton Meeting House. The building was once a Quaker meeting house built from 1764-1765. The home belonged to Humphrey Marshall's father, Abraham Marshall, who offered his home as the meeting place for Quakers throughout the 1720s. The home is recognizable for its stone structure and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 27, 1971.

Nature Preserves & Parks

Marshallton is a beautiful area composed of eloquently designed architectural buildings, but it is also the site of a nature preserve and neighborhood. The public spaces offer residents a serene escape with stunning woodlands and endangered wildlife. Within Marshallton, there is the Natural Lands' Stroud Preserve and the Ingram's Mill Nature Area.

The Natural Lands preserve is a unique destination utilized for recreation and scientific research. The grounds were originally part of the Laid Farms until it belonged to Dr. Morris Stroud, who dedicated the land to the Natural Lands organization in 1990. Stroud was an advocate for natural preservation and, upon his passing, deeded the grounds to be a research site for the Stroud Water Research Center. The preserve is now a thriving natural ecosystem protected by the Environmental Protection Agency’s National Monitoring Program. Nearby the Natural Lands' Stroud Preserve is the Ingram's Mill Nature Area. The 36-acre park is a secluded and peaceful park consisting of walking trails and fishing areas along the creek. The park is a popular destination for Marshallton locals who enjoy the outdoors and are looking for an area to relax and unwind.
