Upper Providence Township is a delightful area spanning 5.81 square miles in Deleware County, Pennsylvania. The neighborhood hosts 10,466 residents with a population density of 1,864.36 per square mile. In Upper Providence Township, residents live in various suburban communities easily accessible by the Benjamin Franklin Highway. Upper Providence Township was originally inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Indians, who utilized the woodlands to create a sustainable lifestyle. The Lenape Indians occupied the land for hundreds of years before the area was settled in 1683. Following European settlement, the area developed and became known as Providence Township. Soon after the town was named, residents pursued major roads to transport goods from Providence to Chester. The road still exists today and is known as Route 252. Once the development of the major road was completed, Providence Township was subdivided into Nether Providence Township and Upper Providence Township in 1687.
In the early days of Upper Providence Township, the area largely consisted of grist mills which flourished until the early 1800s. The thriving mills attracted workers increasing the township's population. Consequently, the area became more family-oriented and opened its first school, Blue Hill School, in 1787. Throughout the early 1800s, the township continued to develop, opening its first library in 1813 and the Sandy Bank School in 1836. Since the early 1800s, the neighborhood experienced the effects of the industrialization period and modernization. Today, the township is considered a desirable area in Pennsylvania and is home to a middle-upper and middle-class population.
Upper Providence Township is the site of the historic Old Rose Tree Tavern. The inn and tavern were built in 1809 and designed in the Federal architectural style. The site was a popular destination for wealthy Philadelphians who frequented the resort for summer vacations throughout the early 19th century. The inn and tavern are representative of the township's development and were listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 21, 1971. Today, the Old Rose Tree Tavern is a popular tourist destination belonging to Rose Tree Park in the heart of Upper Providence Township.
