History of Pottstown

The borough of Pottstown dates back to the early 1700s when William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania, granted the land to his son John Penn in 1701. Before William Penn found the area, among other German, Swedish, and English settlers,  the land was occupied by Native American tribes for hundreds of years. Once the land was deeded to John Penn, the neighborhood quickly shifted with the introduction to the first iron forge in 1714. Soon after, the land became heavily dependent on the iron industry, and by 1732, the steel furnace was in production in Pottstown.

Over the following twenty years, the land was a booming industrial area, and John Potts, belonging to the successful Potts family, purchased a large section of the land. Potts founded the town, then referred to as Pottsgrove, in 1761. The town was continuously known as Pottsgrove until the population vastly increased in the early 1800s, and the name changed to Pottstown. By 1815, Pottstown was incorporated as a borough, making it the second borough in the county. The town continued to develop in the following years with the construction of the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1838. The neighborhood's population increased once again, and the town became known for its significant steel contributions.

Throughout the 1900s, the borough adopted a city manager form of government and at one point had 20 council members.

Today, Pottstown is a thriving community home to many families and young professionals who enjoy Pottstown's suburban local charm. The borough is a great place to visit, offering access to several local attractions, including the Pottstown Riverfront Park, Memorial Park, and Pottsgrove Manor.
