History

Berk County was founded on March 11, 1752. The county was formed from areas within Lancaster County, Philadelphia County, and Chester County. The founding of Berks County was heavily endorsed by diplomat Conrad Weiser but was named after the hometown of William Penn's, founder of Pennsylvania, family hometown in Berkshire, England. The original boundaries of Berks County extended several miles beyond what it consists of today. The county was minimized to found Northumberland County in 1772 and Schuykill County in 1811. The country progressed through the 19th century, experiencing the effects of industrialization and experienced modernization between the late 1800s and early 1900s. Today, the county comprises many flourishing neighborhoods and townships ranging from urban to sparse suburban areas.
