The dog bite lawyers in Andalusia, PA, present this article to share some insight about the neighborhood and its history.

Andalusia is a historic neighborhood in the Bensalem Township in Pennsylvania. The neighborhood is the southernmost part of the county and falls in ZIP code 19020. With Deleware River to the east and south and Poquessing Creek to the north and west, Andalusia remains a stunning neighborhood with a rich history.

The Andalusia Foundation

The Andalusia Foundation was established in 1980 by James Biddle (1929-2005), an American commodore and brother of financier Nicholas Biddle and nephew of Capt. Nicholas Biddle, among other Biddle family members.

The family created the foundation to ensure the preservation of the family's ancestral home, Andalusia. The mansion overlooks the Delaware River in Bucks County, PA. It has been the home to generations of Philadelphia's Biddle family since 1814, when Nicholas Biddle and his wife, Jane Craig, inherited the property from her parents.

During the time, Nicholas, among other Biddle family members, became prominent in banking, diplomacy, law, politics, military service, agriculture, and horticulture.

The family was also friendly with several historically important figures, including presidents and foreign dignitaries. The family often hosted their esteemed guests at the Andalusia mansion.

The Andalusia Foundation manages Biddle family papers, dating from 1747 to the present, stored at Andalusia.

Biddle family members are represented in the collection through diaries, financial records, legal records, scrapbooks, published articles, pamphlets and ephemera, deeds, photographs, and several other materials.

Within the collection, you will also find some secondary-source material about the Biddle family and the administration of Andalusia, such as newspaper clippings, articles, photocopies of original documents, pamphlets, and ephemera, floor plans, and genealogical research on the Biddles and related families.

Andalusia Estate

The Andalusia Estate, also known as the Nicholas Biddle Estate, is 225- acre estate and mansion. The original home was built in 1794 by John Craig, who named the estate after Spain's Andalusia region. The home was later expanded in 1806 by architect Benjamin Latrobe in the Greek Revival style.

Following Nicholas Biddle and Jane Craig's, John Craig's daughter, marriage Nicholas Biddle hired Thomas U. Walter, who designed the dome of the U.S. capitol and was considered to be the dean of American architecture between the 1820s and 1870s, to expand the home into a mansion in 1836.

The mansion was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1966 and, according to The National Park Service, "... is one of the earliest and most pristine examples of the Greek Revival style in the country."

Modern Andalusia

Even though Andalusia was once a lavish area for Philadelphia's wealthiest families, the neighborhood of Andalusia today is a middle-class suburb containing small single-family homes that date back to the 1920s. Following suit of the Andalusia Estate, many buildings and homes in the area represent dramatic architectural styles, including Gothic Revival, Romanesque, and Greek Revival.

Today, the area contains numerous shopping areas and abuts the Philadelphia Mills Mall.
