Angora

The neighborhood is situated within the Southwest section of Philadelphia in the state of Pennsylvania. Its boundaries have not been distinctly set, but Cobbs Creek is to the west, Cedar Park is to the east, West Philadelphia is to its north, and Kingsessing is to the south. The town has two bus lines, the Angora Commuter Rail Station on the Media and Elwyn Line, and a trolley line that intersects at 58th Street and Baltimore Avenue. 

History

Robert and George Callaghan founded the neighborhood in 1863. Initially, they named it Ankara, after a city in Turkey. Development did not begin until 1900 and continued through 1920. Early growth between 1918 and 1920 was restricted to the 5800 block of Baltimore Avenue in addition to an area known as Sherwood Forest. This was partly due to industrialization, as it was home to the Callaghan textile mill, a yarn mill, and a glass factory. However, in the early 20th century, they were erected. 

Neighborhood

The residents have many shopping, dining, and entertainment venues within the neighborhood. Some of these located along the main strip of Baltimore Avenue include:

  • Caterpillar Playhouse
  • Sherwood Park
  • 58th Coffee Shop & Convenience Store
  • Mama's diner

Parks and Recreation

Along the southern edge of the community is Cobbs Creek Park. The park encompasses the 11.8-mile creek within its 851 acres. It has been managed by the Philadelphia Parks & Recreation since 2010. Within the park are three playgrounds:

  • Cobbs Creek Recreation Center - located at Cobbs Creek Parkway and Spruce Street
  • Granahan playground - located at 65th and Callowhill Streets
  • Charles Papa Playground (part of Morris Park in Overbrook) - located just north of Cobbs Creek Golf Course

The park offers its guests many trails for hiking and has become a prominent recreation attraction, offering:

  • swimming
  • golf
  • ball fields
  • tennis and basketball courts
  • ice and roller hockey rinks
  • campgrounds

Education

Residents can attend the public schools that are part of the Philadelphia City School District, such as:

  • Anderson Elementary School - located on South 60th Street
  • John P. Turner Middle School - located on Baltimore Avenue
  • Harrington High School - located on Baltimore Avenue
  • Motivational High School - located on Baltimore Avenue

Some private and charter school options include:

  • KIPP West Philadelphia Preparatory Charter School - located on Baltimore Avenue
  • Faith Connection Christian Academy - located on Baltimore Avenue
  • Boys Latin Charter School - located on Cedar Avenue
  • Cyber School - located on South 57th Street

Demographics

The community is home to low-income households. In fact, the neighborhood's income average is lower than 89.7% of other neighborhoods in the country. As many as 50.6% of the children live below the poverty line, resulting in a higher rate of poverty than 93.6% of other neighborhoods. The common fields within the community's working residents include:

  • 32.4% clerical, assistant, and tech support occupations
  • 27.4% executive, management, and professional occupations
  • 20.2% sales and service jobs
  • 20.0% manufacturing and laborer occupations

Within the population are many different ancestries, such as:

  • Sub-Saharan African (24.4%)
  • African (4.7%)
  • Asian (4.6%)
  • Irish (3.4%)
  • Jamaican (1.3%)
