This article, which has been brought to you by the Elwyn personal injury attorneys at Justice Guardians, goes over the history of chiropractic care and chiropractors in this Pennsylvania town.
Chiropractic care isn't far from celebrating its 150th birthday! In 1885, a man named Daniel David Palmer became fascinated by the spine and the connections in the body. He discovered his interest in the spine after treating a janitor in his office.
According to Palmer, the janitor, who was cleaning with no shirt on, had a noticeable knot in his back. He told Palmer the knot had been there for years, ever since an incident where he was lifting and felt a pop. The back pain had been a constant part of his life ever since.
Palmer offered to try and treat the man and performed his first spinal adjustment. The knot disappeared and the janitor said he felt immediate relief. Palmer stopped working as a magnetic healer and began to study the spine. He believed that spinal adjustments could help to cure any number of medical conditions.
Two years after his encounter with the janitor, Palmer opened up the Palmer School Of Chiropractic. He began to teach others and interest in chiropractic care spread quickly. Within 20 years, Kansas became the first state to recognize chiropractic care as an official form of medicine.
Today, chiropractors have to be licensed. There are more than 7,000 providers throughout the country.
Anytime that a patient has to seek care from a medical professional they should ask for recommendations from their other treating physicians and loved ones. Even with recommendations, it's important to ask questions, such as:
Patients should always feel comfortable with any medical provider they are receiving care from and should seek a second opinion if they don't feel comfortable.
Chiropractors use the least amount of pressure to perform adjustments and the goal is to be as gentle as possible. Adjustments shouldn't cause pain, however, patients can expect to feel sore the next day.
