Darby Township is a township in the Delaware County of Pennsylvania. The area was first settled after the arrival of William Penn in 1682. A year later, it was recognized as one of the localities where a permanent lodgement was developed. Nonetheless, the area remained sparsely settled for over a quarter of a century. In 1682, the Darby Friends' Meeting was established, and Darby was officially recorded on the list of collectors. This would become the first record of the township.
Until 1747, Upper Darby Township and Lower Darby Township were part of one municipal government. In a town meeting of that year, it was decided by the residents the township should be split into two for everyone's convenience. Today, Darby Township has a total area of 1.4 square miles. It consists of two separate territories and is bordered by the municipalities of Colwyn Borough, Glenolden Borough, Sharon Hill Borough, Aldan Borough, Collingdale Borough, Folcroft Borough, Upper Darby Township, Ridley Township, and the City of Philadelphia.

Situated along North MacDade Boulevard in the upper portion of Darby Township is a number of services and stores providing regular goods for residents in the area. This include:
Along the strip are also food chains like Wendy's, Taco Bell, and Little Caesars Pizza. If you can't find what you need in these shops, just behind it on North Andrews Avenue are a Walmart, Forman Mills and ShopRite of Glenolden.
Unlike the upper part of Darby Township, where most of the shopping and dining options are located, the lower part of the township is more like its industrial center. Because of its close proximity to the Philadelphia International Airport, the area is a popular site for shipping companies to establish their facilities. Nevertheless, this portion of the township also houses three playgrounds, the First African Baptist Church, the First African Methodist Episcopal Church, the Darby Township Police Department, The Taste You're Looking For restaurant, Sharon Bar, Carmichael Pizza & Steaks, and Princess market.
Situated alongside Darby Township is the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum. Established in 1972, the 1000-acre national wildlife refuge serves to protect Tinicum Marsh, the largest remaining freshwater tidal marsh in Pennsylvania. Originally named the Tinicum National Environmental Center, its name was changed to John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum to honor the late H. John Heinz III who helped with the marsh's preservation.
Habitats that can be found in the refuge are freshwater tidal marsh, meadow and field, woods, and impounded water. The area is also home to a number of species of birds, fish, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, wildflowers and plants. Some of which are warblers, sandpipers, egrets, invasive carp, mudflats, deer opossums, raccoons, red foxes, coyotes, beavers, bats, Northern brown snakes, the American red-bellied turtle, and more.
The national wildlife refuge offers a number of hiking trails through its natural landscape. Visitors can also learn about the history of the area at its visitor center. The refuge is open to the public every day from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.
