Dryville

The town of Dryville is a census-designated place located in Rockland Township within Berks County, Pennsylvania. It is just south of Lyons in the South Mountains. Other nearby communities include New Jerusalem, Bowers, Boyers Junction, Fleetwood, and Fredericksville. At the heart of the neighborhood is the intersection of Fleetwood Road, Fredericksville Road, and Lyons Road. Bieber Creek flows through the area. 

History

The small community was named after a local postmaster, Benjamin Dry, in 1852. However, the community dates back further as it was developed around the Henry Mertz Lutheran Church. The church was initially opened in 1747, and the current building constructed in 1915 still stands on Fleetwood Road. It was first a log cabin structure built on land donated by Henry Mertz. The congregation was made up of mainly German-speaking worshippers, and the area became known as God's Acre. 

Neighborhood

The Dryville Hotel can be found at the town's center, just off of Lyons Road. The stone building dates back to the 1800s. The current owner purchased the hotel recently and has big plans to renovate the historic building. He also owns other landmark buildings, including:

  • the Liberty Ale House in Reading
  • the Tavern on Liberty in Allentown

Surrounding the community is many farms, including:

  • Stony Ridge Farms
  • Lenhart's Tree Farm
  • Red Rock Farm

Education

The Brandywine Heights Area School District serves the residents. Many of the public schools the residents are zoned for include:

  • Brandywine Heights Elementary School - located on West Barkley Street
  • Brandywine Heights Middle School - located on West Weis Street
  • Kutztown Area Middle School - located on Deisher Lane
  • Brandywine Heights High School - located on Old Topton Road

Other schools and daycares within the community include: 

  • Hogan Learning Academy
  • Lighthouse Christian Academy
  • Gateway Christian School

Demographics

As of 2010, the CDP had a population of 398 residents within its borders. While most residents speak English, as many as 97.5%, there are still 8.8% that speak Italian as their first language. Some of the ancestries that can be found within the community include:

  • German (34.9%)
  • Irish (14.1%)
  • English (6.6%)
  • Italian (6.4%)
  • Polish (5.3%)
  • Swiss (3.2%)
  • Romanian (2.3%)

Most of the residents make an upper to middle-income. This has allowed the town's average to rank higher than 78.2% of other neighborhoods in the country. Many of the residents hold professions such as:

  • executive, management, and professional roles (35.6%)
  • manufacturing and laborer occupations (31.8%)
  • sales and service jobs (17.6%)
  • clerical, assistant, and tech support positions (14.6%)
