Darby is a borough within Delaware County, Pennsylvania. The area was first settled in 1682 by seven Quaker families who were led by abolitionist & fair trade advocate John Blunston. Its name Darby comes from the English city of Derby, where most of the early settlers were from. On May 3, 1853, it was incorporated as a borough. Darby is the home of the fifth-oldest all-volunteer Fire Department and the oldest cemetery in Pennsylvania that's still in continuous use, the Darby Friends Burial Ground. As of the 2019 estimate, the borough has a population of 10,702 people and a total area of 0.8 square miles.
Powell Park is a park in the borough of Darby. Offering a recreational space for residents in the area, it sits along Darby Creek and can be accessed on Walnut Street. Some of the amenities provided are a basketball court, shaded area, open field, park benches, picnic tables, and lights for when it gets dark. The park is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It is also the host of the Uncle Lou's Annual Darby Summer League.
John M. Drew Park is another park in Darby. Located adjacent to the Darby Transportation Center on Main Street, it was named after John Mott Drew, one of the most successful and prominent African American businessmen in Darby. He was the founder of one of the longest-running bus lines in southern Pennsylvania. John M. Drew Park does not offer any amenities for active recreation. However, the green space does feature a paved walking path for dog walking, jogging and running.
Darby Free Library is among one of the oldest libraries in the United States. Founded in 1743 as the Darby Library Company, it is also situated on Main Street in the borough. The library was first opened as a subscription library by 29 Quakers. In 1866, the property on the corner of Main Street and 10th Street was purchased to construct a permanent home for the library/ The building was built by Charles Bonsall and designed by Benjamin D. Price in the Italianate architectural style. In 1898, the library became free and opened its doors to the public.
