The Wharton Esherick Studio was a studio of the craftsman-artist Wharton Esherick. Built between 1926 and 1966, it reflects his evolving sculptural style, from Arts and Crafts to German Expressionism and then Modernism. The property of the studio includes five structures: a home and studio, a 1928 German Expressionist log garage, a 1956 workshop designed with architect Louis Kahn, a woodshed, and a recently reconstructed German Expressionist outhouse. The studio consists of over 300 sculptures, paintings, prints, and furniture and furnishings created by Eshericks.
In 1971, the Wharton Esherick Museum was incorporated as a nonprofit corporation. The 1928 log garage acts as its visitor center. In 1972, the museum was open to the public. On April 26, 1973, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). On April 19, 1993, the studio was designated a National Historic Landmark. A Thematic Woodworking Competition and Exhibition is held every year to encourage creative thinking and the development of new, imaginative designs for items of everyday use. The museum can be found just south of Valley Forge Woods on Horse Shoe Trail.
