Description of Wyncote

Wyncote is a census-designated place in the Cheltenham Township of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. Located at the southeasternmost tip of Montgomery County, just 11 miles from Center City, it borders the northeastern and northwestern sections of Philadelphia. The CDP is bounded by the Philadelphia neighborhoods of Cedarbrook and West Oak Lane, the Cheltenham neighborhoods of Cedarbrook, Elkins Park, Glenside and La Mott, Abington Township, and the borough of Jenkintown. As of the 2010 census, it has a population of 3,044 people and a total area of 0.8 square miles.

Wyncote Historic District

Wyncote Historic District is a national historic district in the Wyncote area. Encompassing over 100 acres of land and 178 contributing buildings, it was made a historic district because of its architecture, development and community planning. Some of its notable buildings are the All Hallows Church, the Beechwood home, and a number of classical Philadelphia stone colonial revival homes and restored Victorian-era homes. On October 16, 1986, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).

Curtis Hall Arboretum

Curtis Hall Arboretum is an arboretum on Church Road in Wyncote. Founded by Maryland Louise Curtis Bok, it was built in 1937 and named after her father, Cyrus Curtis. Frederick Law Olmsted designed the landscaping for the arboretum. It features:

  • Two ponds
  • A colonnade
  • A small World War II memorial (The Valley of Remembrance)
  • 50 types of trees
  • A dog park
  • Hills
  • Curtis Hall

Once the ballroom for the Curtis family mansion, Curtis Hall is now operated by the Cheltenham Township Department of Parks and Recreation. The arboretum also serves as the Cheltenham High School men's and women's cross country teams home course. On March 20, 2002, Curtis Arboretum was listed on the NRHP. On November 7, 2005, it was designated by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC).

Thomas Williams Park

Thomas Williams Park is another point of interest in Wyncote. A popular recreational area for local residents, it can be found on the corner of North Bent Road and Hewett Roads. The 9.13-acre park offers amenities like four tennis courts, a full outdoor basketball court, a softball field that has been converted for soccer usage, a playground, a tot-lot play area, and a covered pavilion. In 1971, the park was dedicated to Thomas Williams, the owner of the estate that was previously located there.

Cheltenham High School

Cheltenham High School was established in 1884 in Wyncote. One of the oldest public high schools in Pennsylvania, it is the only high school in the Cheltenham Township School District. In 1959, the school relocated to its current site on Rices Mill Road. According to Niche.com, it has an overall grade of an A-minus and is the 92nd best public high school in the state. The school has a population of 1,382 students from grades 9 through 12. There is a student-to-teacher ratio of 13 to 1. Based on state test scores, 68% of its students are at least proficient in reading and 59% are in math. GreatSchools gives the high school a rating of 5 out of 10.
