Altonah

The small neighborhood of Altonah is located in the northeastern region of Bethlehem in Northampton County. It is south of the Lehigh Valley Thruway and east of Fred B. Rooney Highway. The main roadways that travel within the town are East Macada Road, Johnston Drive, East Boulevard, and Linden Street. The nearest communities include Westgate Hills, Middletown, Freemansburg, and Hanover. 

History

The community was part of a 500-acre tract along Monocracy Creek that was deed to the affluent Philadelphia merchant William Allen in 1741. Allen served in politics and was once one of the most powerful men in Philadelphia. He was a loyalist and disapproved of seeking independence from the British. After establishing his residency in 1750, he founded Allentown in 1762. 

Geography 

Along the northern region of the neighborhood is Monocracy Creek. The waterway is a tributary of the Lehigh River. It is one of the 56 limestone streams within the state. The creek flows for 20.3 miles from its headwaters near the borough of Chapman to Lehigh River. 

Neighborhood

In the southern region of the community is the Holy Savior Cemetery, located on Linden Street. The cemetery is part of the Allentown Diocesan Cemeteries, along with Resurrection Cemetery located on North Krocks Road in Allentown.
