Once European settlers took over the area, the land was named for its location along the east end of the river's original waterfalls known as the 'Falls of the Schuylkill.' In the early history of East Falls, during the Colonial and Federal eras, the town was the highest point unobstructed, making it easily accessible by boat. The area became a popular transfer point to the former Indian path until the establishment of Fairmount Water Works.

Throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, East Falls developed and became a popular destination for visitors. Several inns and taverns opened in the area allowing for economic progression. In the 19th century, East Falls was the site of several mills and factories which thrived through the industrial period, including the notable Dobson Mills textile factory. By the 20th century, East Falls was a post-modernist town featuring various housing developments. As time went on, the area became known for its central location, attracting city commuters. Today, East Falls is considered a desirable place to live in Pennsylvania.
