Highland Park

The neighborhood of Highland Park is located within Upper Darby Township in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Nearby neighborhoods are Kirklyn, Bywood, Millbourne, Haddington, Penn Wynne, and Llanerch. Market Street travels east and west across the town. Other roadways include State Road, Lansdowne Avenue, and East Township Line Road.

Historical Landmark

Just north of the McCall Golf Course is the Friends of the Grange, a historical museum. The estate was named after a large estate in Paris after John Ross purchased the property from Charles Cruikshank in 1782. The estate became a frequent spot for elegant entertainment. Ross had many notable acquaintances, such as George Washington.

Unfortunately, Ross died in 1800, leaving his financial affairs in dismay. The Grange Estate, then 548 acres, was sold and purchased many times. In 1847, Dennis Kelly purchased the property and used it for the Cobbs Creek to power his mill.

Today the estate only consists of 9.97 acres, as the rest was sold off during the years. The property includes many gardens, and tours are available.

Neighborhood

The Upper Darby Art Gallery is located within the community on Park Avenue. The gallery opened in 2018 and featured works from the following in addition to offering a wide selection of classes:

From 1897 until 1956, the University of Pennsylvania had a Flower and Clark Observatory in the neighborhood. The site is now the Observatory Park, equipped with basketball courts and playground equipment.

Company 26 Fire Department offers the community fire rescue support. The department has one rescue truck and helps make up the Upper Darby Township Fire Department. The greater department is a combination of both paid and volunteer members that consists of a headquarters building and 5 stations throughout the township.

Education

The community is home to the Highland Park Elementary School. In the 1970s, the school began to push for the Pennsylvania firefly, also known as the lightning bug or dot-dash firefly, to become the state insect. The school was honored with a bronze plaque for their dedication and achievement after Governor Milton J. Shapp signed the bill, officially making the Pennsylvania Firefly the state's insect.
