History

Today, Bustleton is centered at the intersection of Grant Avenue and Bustleton Avenue, but in the early history of the neighborhood, Bustleton was centered on the Bustleton Tavern, a local bar established before the American Revolution.

Bustleton originally belonged to the Lower Dublin Township, but following the Act of Consolidation, 1854, the township ceased to exist and was incorporated into the City of Philadelphia.

With Pennypack Park, the site of much industry including mills, to its south, The Bustleton area was a trading center and hosted hotels drawing farmers bringing goods for sale via horse and buggy.

The majority of Bustleton's commerce was conducted via small streams and rivers of the present-day Pennypack Watershed. During this time, the old Paul's Run waterway provided navigation from the Bustleton Tavern all the way to the Delaware River.

Historic Churches in Bustleton

Bustleton is home to the Lower Dublin Baptist Church, also known as Pennepack Baptist Church. The church is one of the oldest Baptist congregations in North America and one of the oldest churches in America.

The church congregation was founded in 1688 by Elias Keach, the son of Benjamin Keach, a Baptist preacher, and author in London. The church was the first Baptist church in Pennsylvania and was originally Calvinist in theology.

The church faced reconstruction twice, dating back to 1707, and the current building was built in 1805.

On the grounds of the church stands a burial ground that hosts many notable Americans and Revolutionary War Soldiers.

The Lower Dublin Baptist Church still meets weekly in the present day.

Bustleton is also home to the Protestant Episcopal Church of Saint Luke, The Beloved Physician, consecrated on August 30th, 1861.  The Protestant Episcopal Church is the only church in Philadelphia designed by the architect Richard Upjohn of New York.

The church is located on Welsh Road and hosts a burial ground. The burial ground is now home to the veterans from the Civil War and continues to serve present-day veterans.

Nearby Bustleton, PA, is Pennypack Park which hosts The 1870 Roman Catholic Church of Maternity, Blessed Virgin Mary on Bustleton Ave.

The church is a large Roman Catholic parish that served as a mother church for most of the parishes in the Northeast section of Philadelphia. It has also been recorded that Saint Katherine Drexel, an American heiress, philanthropist, religious sister, educator, and founder, attended Mass in the Old Blessed Virgin Mary Church.
