Walnut Hill is a neighborhood in West Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The diverse neighborhood is home to many college students and is found between 45th and 52nd Street.

Historic Landmarks

Walnut Hill has been a part of West Philadelphia since the early 20th century. The neighborhood was mostly built during the turn of the century up to the 1940s and still has many buildings reflecting the architectural styles of the time.

Within the streets of Walnut Hill are several row homes and apartment buildings remaining from the early-mid 1900s when the town saw an influx of population.

The neighborhood hosts several historical landmarks dating back to the early 20th century, including the La Blanche Apartments and the Henry C. Lea Elementary School.

The La Blanche Apartments are located at 5100 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The apartment building was built in 1910 and designed by Anderson & Haupt in the Colonial Revival and Georgian Revival architectural styles. The building was constructed as a result of Walnut Hill's second housing boom in 1907. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on March 7, 1985.

The Henry C. Lea Elementary School was built in 1914 by building company Cramp & Co. Henry deCourcy Richards designed the school building in the Late Gothic Revival style. The building is notable for its classic limestone entrance and terra cotta trim. When the school building first opened, it was used for teacher education and training. The school still operates, serving students in grades PK, K-8. The school building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 18, 1988.
