Centennial District is a 700-acre section of West Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The neighborhood is known for containing the Philadelphia Zoo and the Please Touch Museum. Centennial District is a charming area in Pennsylvania belonging to ZIP code 19131.

Historic Places in Centennial District

Centennial District is known for hosting several of Philadelphia's most popular attractions. For those looking to witness history and learn more about the town, the Centennial District is a great place to start.

The district is home to the Sweetbriar Mansion, a historical place originally named Peterstone in 1691. The property was bought by John Ross in 1791 and later acquired by Samuel Breck,  John Ross's son-in-law. Breck built the Sweetbriar Mansion on the property in 1797 to isolate him and his family from the Yellow Fever epidemic. Unfortunately, several years down the line, Breck's only daughter, Lucy Breck, died during an epidemic of River Fever in 1828.

By 1869, the stunning mansion was acquired by Fairmont Park and was restored in 1932. Since 1939 the mansion has been maintained by the Modern Club, a philanthropic organization, in cooperation with the Fairmount Park Commission.

Nearby the historic mansion is the Smith Memorial Arch located at Avenue of the Republic, Philadelphia, PA 19104. The arch was initiated by Richard Smith, who acquired $500,000 to build a monument memorializing Pennsylvania’s naval and military heroes of the Civil War.

The arch was designed and constructed by thirteen artists and was completed in 1912. Complete with nine busts, three figures, and two equestrians, the Smith Memorial Arch is a showstopper and a must-see for all visitors.

Despite Centennial District's small size, there is much to discover in the area. Complete with historic landmarks, popular attractions, and access to the Schuylkill River, one would never guess there are also schools in the area including,

School of the Future

  • The public magnet school hosts a student population of 560 in grades 9-12 with a student-to-teacher ratio of 18:1. The school is popular for teenagers in the area because of its proximity to all the attractions Centennial District offers. The school has also ranked #301 (of 1,005) in Best High Schools for Athletes in Pennsylvania.

Inquiry Charter School

  • The public charter school hosts a student population of 266 in grades PK, K-5 with a student-to-teacher ratio of 12:1. The school has ranked in the top 20% of all elementary schools in Philadelphia and emphasizes exploratory learning.

Blankenburg Elementary School

  • The public school hosts a student population of 417 in grades PK, K-8 with a student-to-teacher ratio of 13:1. The school is known for its variety of educational programs, including, but not limited to, City Year Partnership, Spiral Q Puppet Theater, the Instructional Music Program, and Reading Olympics.

If you're looking to visit or reside in an area with a rich history and many attractions near several schools, then Centennial District is the area for you.
