The Caleb Pusey House was built in 1683 and is the second oldest English house that's open to the public in all of Pennsylvania. The home is said to have been the last standing residence of Willam Penn.
Penn so graciously granted "Landing Ford," a plantation located near Chester Creek, to Pusey that boasted around 100 acres of land. Today, that land is where visitors can walk around the property and enjoy the museum and all it has to offer.
Born in Upper Lambourne, Berkshire, England, Caleb lived most of his life in London studying the "Lastmaker's" trade. Caleb acquired 250 acres of land from William Penn after his marriage to Anne Stone Worley.
In 1682, Pusey came from England to the colony and became a partner and owner of the founded mills led by William Penn. Pusey began the development of their one-story house shortly after moving to the colony. The house was constructed in two parts, and each phase is thought to have been completed a few years apart.
The home was fully finished by 1696 and was inhabited by Pusey and his family. It was understood that the Chester Monhy Meetings and Quaker services took place at the family house.
In 1960, the Friends of the Caleb Pusey House Inc. was organized to help repair and restore the deteriorating property, which was at the brink of collapsing. The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Board and the Commonwealth funded the reconstruction of the property.
The organization continues to maintain the home today, which still houses truly restored items of decor from the colonial period. They also hold community activities and services open to the public, as well as a gallery and gift shop for guests.
