Doctor Philip Jaisohn was a visionary, a doctor, and a freedom activist in both Korea and America. In addition to becoming the first Korean to attain a medical degree in America, he was the first Korean citizen who became naturalized. His work continues to inspire many people throughout the world.
In 1896, Dr. Philip Jaisohn published his first Korean newspaper, "The Independent," and was a huge success amongst both the Korean public as well as American citizens. Fast forward almost 100 years in 1975, The Philip Jaisohn Memorial Foundation was established by eight doctors from Media, PA, who were influenced by his life's work. The foundation's purpose was to provide medical services and treatments for immigrants who recently came to America.
Dr. Jaisohn was a renowned Korean doctor and an advocate for social changes, an educator, a father, and a loving husband. The Philip Jaisohn House is the headquarters for the foundation which has belonged to the Jaisohn family for over 25 years. He originally began his practice from his home and began writing supportive news journals and medical articles based around Korean independence.
The home was built using red brick, symbolizing a more Federalist-style home that sites up top a hill that overlooks a natural reserve. After the passing of Jaisohn's daughter, the natural reserve was granted to Media.
Don's miss out on experiencing all this historic house has to offer, from preserved documents, artifacts, to special items that all hold historical significance in an important time in America.
