Plank House (Blackbeard's Mistress's House)

This article is presented by the personal injury lawyers in Marcus Hook, PA, from Justice Guardians, who encourages families to get out on the weekend and explore your local museum.

The Plank House is an early 18th century home that was legendarily owned by the mistress of Blackbeard, the pirate. The mistress was named Margret, and it is said she would stay in the town of Marcus Hook while he visited her.

A large amount of Marcus Hooks's historical relevance comes from its accessibility to the waterfront. Known as the first port for Philadelphia, it was also a shelter for pirates in the 1800s. In the early days, the Marcus Hook market offered a place for fisherman and sea travelers to sell merchandise and goods to help them on their next voyage.

In fact, the early maps suggest that what is now Second Street was originally named Discord Road, presumably because it was the location of many of the pirates. Even though there no evidence to support the claim, rumor says the Marcus Hook Plank House was the residence of a mistress of the notorious pirate Edward Teach, aka "Blackbeard."

He was known to have spent most of his days operating the Delaware River while visiting his mistress in Marcus Hook.

The Museum

Today, the Plank House provides visitors with the ability to get involved with archaeological artifacts and tons of other artifacts dating back to the early 1700s. Guests are encouraged to visit and volunteer with the organization for a fun educational experience.
