Harrowgate is a neighborhood in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The neighborhood is located directly northeast of Kensington, adjacent to Kensington Avenue. The neighborhood belongs to ZIP code 19134 and area codes 215, 267, and 445.

History

The neighborhood of Harrowgate was founded in 1784 by American Revolutionary War Veteran, Captain George Esterly when he discovered springs near modern-day Kensington Ave. and Tioga St. The site of the crossstreets are is currently the site of Harrowgate Square, a park covering one city block.

The well-known Dr. Benjamin Rush tested the spring water and pronounced it healthful for bathing and drinking. Soon following Dr. Benjamin Rush's proclamation, Captain George Esterly established a spa in Harrowgate with gardens, overnight accommodations, food and drink, occasional concerts, and coach service from Second and Market Sts. in Philadelphia. Esterly named the spa after the town of Harrogate in England.

Unfortunately, in 1800, the spring dried up. However, that didn't stop the town from developing and flourishing.

Nearby was Cedar Grove, a country estate of the Paschall and Morris families. The modest mansion was built in 1746 and has since been expanded. The Morris family donated the Harrowgate house and its furnishings to the city. The house was moved in 1926 to West Fairmount Park, with much of the original furniture. The site is now open to the public.

Historically, Harrowgate was a working-class community whose residents could trace their ancestry to England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales.
