History

Paoli was built around an inn kept in 1769 by Joshua Evans. Evans built the inn on the 500 acres of land his father bought from William Penn, founder of the Province of Pennsylvania.

Evans named the inn after General Pasquale Paoli, who was from Corsica, a Mediterranean island. Following Paoli's acceptance of the 45th and final toast at a Saint Patrick's Day celebration, Evans chose to honor him with the naming of the inn. The inn's location on the Philadelphia and Lancaster Turnpike, about 20 miles (one day's drive for a horse-drawn wagon) from Philadelphia, contributed to its success. The site of the inn is currently the Paoli Post Office.

Battle of Paoli

On September 20th, 1777, General Charles Grey, along with 5,000 British soldiers, launched a surprise attack on a Patriot encampment. The attack became known as the Battle of Paoli.

General Charles Grey intercepted George Washington's orders regarding British rearguard actions and directed his troops to assault the small regiment of Americans commanded by General Anthony Wayne. To maintain the attack's element of surprise, Grey ordered his troops to remove the flint from their muskets and only use bayonets and swords under cover of darkness.

The attack was successful with the help of a Loyalist spy who provided a secret password, "here we are, and there they go". Upon signal, General Grey and his troops overran multiple American pickets and launched their attack on the Continental Army Camp.

The Battle of Paoli resulted in 201 American soldier deaths and injuries. The British were even able to capture 71 American soldiers and only suffered 4 British killings with 7 injuries.

General Anthony Wayne's reputation following the attack was tarnished. He demanded a formal court-martial to clear his name. By November 1st, 1777, a board of 13 officers declared General Wayne acted with honor, and his name had been reclaimed.

Today, you can walk through the streets of Malvern, Pennsylvania, and see the grounds where the Battle of Paoli occurred.
