Glen Riddle is a community within Middletown Township in Deleware County, Pennsylvania. The small community belongs to ZIP codes 19037 and 19063. Located at the intersection of Pennsylvania Route 452 and Parkmount Road near Chester Creek, Glen Riddle is an ideal area for growing families looking to live in suburbia.
The history of Glen Riddle begins once the property of Isaac Sharpless and Gideon Hatton, locally known as 'Pennsgrove Mills,' was retained in February 1854.
The area soon became a community following the estate purchase by Peter and George W. Soon enough, the town held a store in the village, and George W. Hill was appointed the first postmaster.
When Mr. Riddle purchased the area known today as Glen Riddle, the post office was renamed Pennsgrove, and Samuel Riddle became the postmaster until August 1846 when David B. Stacey, who owned the store in the village, was appointed to discharge the office for two years until Samuel Riddle was appointed again.
The property was retained due to postal mistakes to which letters intended for the office in Pennsgrove Mills were being sent to Pennsgrove, NJ. Following complaints reported to the Postal Department, the post office was renamed, Glen Riddle.
Later on, in May 1879, gold dust was discovered in dirt drawn from the Glen Riddle Mills. The residents at the time were elated about the discovery, and specimens of the valuable dust were sent to Professor Foot, of the State Geological Survey and James E. Brown, the druggist at Rockdale. Quickly after, the scholars tested the dust and declared it was gold.
It was declared that the gold dust discovered in Glen Riddle was five times purer than ordinary dust.
