Bensalem was founded in 1692 and was named by Joseph Growden, a European settler who owned an estate named Manor of Bensalem, named in honor of William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania. Growden originally named the town Salem, the Semitic term for peace, but the syllable Ben was added in 1701.

Bensalem's first influx of immigration was predominantly Dutch and Swedish until a later influx of English immigrants moved to the area.
