History

Germantown was founded in 1683 as a borough by German Quaker and Mennotied families. Despite the area being known for its German founding, many Dutch immigrants actually occupied the area. Therefore, the town's population mainly spoke Dutch until 1709.

Germantown has been an important area in American history. In 1688, the town became the birthplace of the antislavery movement in America. During the time, Quaker pastors native to Germantown wrote a petition against slavery based upon the Bible's verse, "Do onto others what you would have them done onto you." Even though the petition led to no immediate action, it did begin the process of banning slavery in Pennsylvania.

Later on in American History, Germantown also became a battle site during the American Revolutionary War. The Battle of Germantown took place on October 4, 1777, and resulted in 673 lost American soldiers and 575 lost British soldiers. The battle was significant for the American Revolutionary War because the battle contributed to France officially recognizing the Americans leading to an alliance between France and America.

During the yellow fever epidemic in 1793, Germantown was the site of the Deshler-Morris House where George Washington stayed. During his stay, Washington also established the first American bank in United States history in Germantown.

Germantown has remained a significant place in American history and today is considered a desirable place to live in Pennsylvania.
