Native Americans originally inhabited Hazelwood until 1758, when the Stanwix Treaty was made amongst Scottish settlers and Native Americans.

The settlers obtained a large tract of woodlands featuring rows of hazelnut trees, after which the town of Hazelwood was named.

The first settlers began to develop the town, including the construction of the Hazel Hill estate built by the politician John Woods in 1784. The home is now the second oldest stone building in Pittsburgh.

Throughout the 18th century, Hazelwood continued to develop through industrialization. The town's first railroad station was constructed, and by 1869, the town was incorporated into the city of Pittsburgh.

Towards the end of the 19th century, Hazelwood was no larger agricultural farmland. Instead, the neighborhood developed into a popular town with over 200 businesses, the Civic Arena and the Hill District.

Hazelwood was impacted by the steel industry's decline in the 1980s but, luckily, was able to recover and remains a desirable place to live in Pittsburgh.
