History

The borough of Jenkintown is named after Welsh pioneer settler Stephen Jenkins. Jenkintown is a longstanding community in Pennsylvania that was incorporated in December 1874.

The borough has been a tight-knit community since its founding. One of the strongest representations of the neighborly values in Jenkintown is the Jenkintown Fire Department and the Pioneer Company. The department is entirely volunteer-run and has been a crucial part of the community for over 125 years.

Jenkintown's quaint community holds local history and is also the site of several historic landmarks recognized nationally.

The first historic landmark in Jenkintown is the Jenkintown Library, also referred to as the Jenkins' Town Lyceum Building. The library and lyceum were built in 1839 and further expanded in 1910. The library and lyceum span 1.1 acres and remain open today. The building is known for its stunning architecture, with an extended front porch and tall columns. The library was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Another historic location in Jenkintown is the Strawbridge and Clothier Store nearby the Jenkintown Library. The store opened in 1931 and was expanded in 1954 before it moved to Willow Grove Mall in 1988. The grand building was built from 1930-1931  and is known for its Art Deco architectural style. After the Strawbridge and Clothier store was relocated, the building was occupied by CDNow, an online company that sold discs and products related to music. Today, the site is used as an office. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.
