History

The land of Upper Darby was originally inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Indians. The tribe utilized the land's deep woodlands and created their own community based on agriculture composed of longhouses and homes.

The Lenape Indians occupied the land for thousands of years until 1653 when the first Swedish settlers arrived.

The Swedish settlers occupied the land for a brief period of time until Dutch settlers dominated the area in 1655. The Dutch were later outnumbered by English settlers in 1664.

English rule possessed the land for several years until 1681 when William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania, was offered a land grant. Penn founded the colony of Pennsylvania around that time and designated a large portion of the land to become Upper Darby Township.

The town was greatly involved in the antislavery movement known to host several members of the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society. Additionally, many homes in Upper Darby were stops along the Underground Railroad.

Throughout the late 1800s, the population of Upper Darby grew immensely after the town became the site of the first mills in Deleware County.

The community continued to develop beginning with the introduction to elevated train lines in 1907. By the 1920s, Upper Darby became the second busiest shopping district in the region and became the most populous municipality in Pennsylvania during the 1960s.
