History

West Oak Lane has been a neighborhood in Philadelphia for over two centuries but mainly developed throughout the 1920 and 1930s.

Throughout the 19th century, West Oak Lane was known for its popular Cedar Park Inn. The inn was a prominent feature for the town before it was torn down in 1931.

In the following years, West Oak Lane developed rapidly into a thriving residential community. The population vastly increased throughout the 1900s and changed demographically around the 1960s when more African Americans moved to the town.

Today, the town is known for its annual jazz festival. The festival became an annual tradition in 2003 and is a long-awaited event featuring popular artists such as Jeffrey Osbourne and Teena Marie.

Nearby stands the Philadelphia National Cemetery. The cemetery spans 13.3 acres and is notable for its Mexican- American War monument and Confederate Soldiers and Sailors Monument. The Mexican- American monument is a memorial for thirty-eight veterans and the Confederate monument is in remembrance of 184 prisoners who died during the American Civil War.
