Andorra is a unique neighborhood in Philadelphia. Originally, the neighborhood consisted of two estates belonging to Henry H. Houston during the 1880s. During the early 20th century, Sam Houston, Henry Houston's son, attempted to sell the estates.
After several attempts, in 1922, the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania bought 100 acres from the estate to build the world's largest Episcopal Cathedral. They began construction in 1932, but construction was delayed when the Great Depression struck the area, and only the side section of the chapel and apse were built. St. Mary's Church eventually occupied the building.
Houston decided to hire architect Eero Saarinen to plan a suburban community with additional acres of land at his disposal. With the assistance of designer and architect Robert Rodes McGoodwin, the Houston estate constructed 400 homes that eventually led to the modern-day Andorra neighborhood.
The suburban development was named Cathedral Hills but later renamed Andorra. During the 1950s, the development's ownership was transferred to the Andorra Homes Civic Association.
