Before Mayfair was what it is today, the area was largely farmland occupied by local farmers and The Edwin Forrest Home For Children, built from 1853-54 for William Gaul, a wealthy brewer.

The Edwin Forrest home was the center of the Philadelphia School of Design for Women and, for a period of time, one of the nation's largest art schools for women. The home was listed as a National Historic Landmark in 1933.

Mayfair was first established in 1929 and began to reach full development following World War II. At the time, the neighborhood was considered attractive for its more spacious living environments as an alternative to dense, small city living.
