Wilkinsburg was originally inhabited by Native Americans who utilized the land's access to the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio Rivers. Being located on the Appalachian Plateau made the area an ideal location for fishing and hunting.

In 1812, the land was officially named Wilkinsburg after John Wilkins Jr., a United States Army officer who served from 1796-1802.

By 1887, Wilkinsburg became an independent borough and continues to thrive as a flourishing borough today.
