History

The town of Oakland was named after the land's abundance of Oak trees pre-modernization. Many of the beautiful Oak trees in the area stood on the farm of William Eichbaum, who settled in the area in 1840.

Today, Oakland is home to the Schenley Farms National Historic District, which comprises several historic buildings and another historic area known as the Oakland Civic Center Historic District. The historic district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 22, 1983.
