The town of Southampton is named after Southampton, England, where European settlers who followed William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania, were originally from. Before European settlers arrived, the land was occupied by the Lenni Lenape Indians, a Native American tribe.
When William Penn found the land, he attempted to ensure peaceful coexistence by buying the land with Wampum, a traditional shell bead of the Eastern Woodlands tribe, and useful tools such as fish hooks, axes, and knives.
By June 23, 1683, the land was entirely sold to William Penn by the Lenni-Lenape Chief, Tamanend.
In 1685, Southampton was recognized by the Provincial Council as a township, and the town's boundaries were extended towards Bensalem.
Following William Penn's land acquisition, many Quaker English settlers fleeing from religious persecution found the area. The Quakers quickly became the prominent population in the area and formed the Southampton Baptist Church in 1746.
By the 18th century, Dutch colonists found the land, and the farmlands and farming lifestyle began to flourish. During the turn of the century, roads were beginning to be constructed and mainly used Second Street Pike to carry produce and products from Southampton into Philadelphia.
By the 1870s, the railroad extended to Southampton, bringing increased demand for Southampton farmer's milk and produce. The area continued to flourish and continued to develop in the 20th century when electricity was introduced.
The town embraced development, and today is a flourishing modern neighborhood that still holds its small-town feel.
