History

The Hays grounds were originally occupied by Native American tribes until the first European settler, John Smalls, arrived in 1789. Smalls named the land Six Mile Ferry Village after the railroad that ran along the town's street up to the coal tipple at Six Mile Ferry.

In the early 1900s, Hays belonged to the Baldwin Township. However, by 1929 the town was officially annexed to the city of Pittsburgh.

In the following years, hays continued to develop and industrialize. By 1942, Hays was the site of the Hays Army Ammunition Plant. The plant was originally built for the U.S. Navy, but by 1966, the site was primarily utilized by the U.S. Army, particularly during the Vietnam War.

When the plant closed in 1993 and was donated to the Urban Development Authority of Pittsburgh, the town's population significantly dropped.

Today, the town remains a quaint area offering tons of local charm.
