The neighborhood of Highland Park is located within northeastern Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Highland Park spans a total area of 1.163 square miles hosting an approximate population of 6,363. The neighborhood belongs to zip code 17009.

History

Highland Park was originally inhabited by Native Americans until swiss settler, Alexander Negley, arrived in 1778. Negley bought a farm on Allegheny River spanning 278 acres which he named "Fertile Bottom." The land that Negley purchased now belongs to the neighborhood's Highland Park.

Alexander's son, Jacob Negley, was a prominent community member during the early 19th century. Jacob Negley founded a village in East Liberty, established a bank, helped found the East Liberty Presbyterian Church in 1919, and built a steam-powered mill on Greensburg & Pittsburgh Turnpike.

In the mid-1800s, the area of Highland Park developed following the construction of the Pennsylvania Railroad. The population increased to 5,000 in 1868, and transportation development further improved after the incorporation of East Liberty.

By 1870, the community's city council passed the Penn Avenue Act allowing the paving of streets and a horse-drawn carriage service, which extended from Pittsburgh to East Liberty in 1872.

Following the late 1800s, Highland Park developed as a streetcar suburb, and it became an attractive neighborhood to reside in. The area constructed spaced out rowhomes, and the neighborhood's proximity to Highland Park became an attractive selling point.

Today, the neighborhood holds its historic charm and remains a desirable place for its proximity to the stunning and well-maintained Highland Park.

Historic District

The entire neighborhood of Highland Park was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 30, 2007. The district consists are 2,000 buildings, many of which are homes built from 1860-1930.

The district is known for its contributing homes' Victorian and early 20th century architectural styles.

The district has been home to several notable residents including,

  • Gene Kelly, an American award-winning actor, and performer.
  • Billy Eckstine, an American jazz singer, and bandleader during the swing era.
