The town of Manayunk was originally a community in Roxborough Township bought and founded by William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania. Penn sold the land to the Wigard Levering family, and Levering's son, Jacob Levering, built the first home in Manayunk in 1716.

For many years following the town's founding, residents were dissatisfied with the area's name, and in 1824, the town was named Manayunk after the Lenape word, mëneyung, which means river.

On June 11, 1840, Manayunk was incorporated as a borough later merged into the City of Philadelphia following the Act of Consolidation in 1854.

Following the consolidation, the town became one of Philadelphia's manufacturing centers until the 1980s, when the town saw decreased manufacturing jobs. The town was revitalized in the 1990s and enhanced its small-town charm by constructing homes, hilly streets, and cobblestone pavements.

Today, the town is filled with local shops and restaurants and is home to many growing families.
