Before the neighborhood of Edgely was known as it is today, it was originally referred to as Cold Springs in respect to its proximity of two nearby springs. Following the introduction of the town's station for the New York Division of the Pennsylvania Railroad, the neighborhood was named Edgely on September 1, 1891.
Edgely, known as Cold Springs at the time, became known as the location of the first baptist church in Pennsylvania. The church was founded in 1684 and was pioneered by baptist minister Thomas Dungan.
Thomas Dungan arrived in Cold Springs in 1683, followed by his father, William Dungan, in 1683. William Dungan purchased 200-acres of land in the area from William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania. On the land, the Dungan's founded a small baptist congregation until 1702, following William Dungan's death.
Many of the congregation members moved on to the Pennypack Church in Lower Dublin Township. However, the descendants of the Dungan family remained in Edgely.
Today, the town of Edgely consists of single-family homes with some commercial areas containing restaurants and shops.
