History

The land of Havertown was once owned by William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania, in the late 1600s. The Haverford Township to which Havertown belongs to was founded in 1681.

The town was settled by Welsh Quakers, who named the area after Haverfordwest, Wales.

Havertown developed beginning in the late 1600s when the Haverford Road was planned and constructed by civil ordinance. The area continued to develop through the 1700s and is noted for its presence of Irish immigrants in the 1800s.

The influx of Irish immigrants began with Dennis Kelly. Kelly was born in Ireland and moved to Havertown in 1806. Kelly began working in the large mills within Havertown and eventually became the owner of a large mills complex in the town. His success attracted other Irish Catholics to the area, and soon enough, the first Catholic Church opened in 1882 with the aid of a generous donation made by Kelly.

During the 1920s, there was another influx of the Irish population following the construction of Brookline community homes. The neighborhood still consisted of several Protestant residents, but after the third surge of Irish migration following the development of housing tracts, the Irish population dominated the area.

In 2000, Havertown ranked in the top 60 of census recognized municipalities with Irish ancestry.
