Torresdale, formerly known as Torrisdale, is a neighborhood in the far east section of Philadelphia in Pennsylvania. Located along the Deleware River, between Holmesburg and Bensalem Township, the neighborhood belongs to ZIP code 19114.

History

Charles Macalester Jr. named Torresdale's original name Torrisdale after his family's ancestral Scotland home. The neighborhood was originally a part of the Deleware Township in Philadelphia and part of the Lower Dublin Township until the Act of Consolidation in 1854.

The Act of Consolidation was conducted by the Pennsylvania General Assembly and created the consolidated City and County of Philadelphia, expanding the city's territory to the entirety of Philadelphia County and dissolving the other municipal authorities in the county. Governor William Bigler approved the Act on February 2, 1854.

In 1894, Torresdale became home to The Rowling Association of American Colleges. The association was the first collegiate athletic organization in the United States. When the organization was founded, the captains of the leading teams devised a primary rule of eligibility: that only undergraduate students should be eligible to represent their college in the regatta.

While there have been several amendments and additions, this rule remains the foundation of the NCAA rules of eligibility.

Before the Philadelphia Main Line, Torresdale, along with Holmesburg and Andalusia, had been Philadelphia's posh suburban neighborhood.

One prime example of this reputation is Glen Foerd on the Delaware, a luxurious and historic riverside mansion and estate near the mouth of Poquessing Creek.  Also demonstrating the neighborhood's wealth is Andalusia, also known as the Nicholas Biddle Estate, a historic mansion and estate on the Deleware River for which the village of Andalusia is named.

Education

The School District of Philadelphia serves the neighborhood of Torresdale. Established in 1818,  the district is the 8th largest school district in the nation by enrollment, serving over 200,000 students. Residents of Torresdale are zoned to three schools including,

Thomas Holme Elementary School

With such rich history, it is no surprise that Torresdale is home to numerous notable sites. Including the Holy Family University, a Roman Catholic liberal arts university. The university was chartered in 1954 by the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth and is the youngest of the four Catholic universities in Philadelphia.

Also in Torresdale stands The Union League Golf Club at Torresdale. The golf course was designed by Donald Ross and is one of the finest golf courses in the Philadelphia region. In 2015, the Union League of Philadelphia, a patriotic society to support the policies of Abraham Lincoln, undertook a complete restoration of the course and historic clubhouse.

If you're looking to see more historic sites in Torresdale, then make sure to stop by The Frankford Avenue Bridge Over Poquessing Creek. The bridge is 10.3 miles long and has been part of the boundary between Bucks and Philadelphia counties since 1682. The bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.
