Allegheny West is a historic neighborhood in Pennsylvania. The quaint area spans 0.14 square miles and has two ZIP codes, 15212 and 15233. The area has representation on Pittsburgh City Council by the council member for district one and is home to 421 residents.

History

Native Americans frequented the neighborhood of Allegheny West until the late 18th century.

In 1787, David Redick began a survey of the area to designate land to Continental soldiers as part of their pay for service in the American Revolution. By 1788, several lots in the neighborhood were auctioned off in Philadelphia.

From 1846-1847, the first houses in Allegheny West were built in the district. Around the time the first houses were being built, the streets were simultaneously planned out. The area became populated as more and more people thoroughly enjoyed the Allegheny West area, and in the 1860s, there was another boom in housing construction.

In the late 19th century, Ridge Avenue became known as "Millionaire's Row." Along the avenue stood lavish mansions built for  Henry W. Oliver, an American Industrialist, William Penn Snyder, owner of the Shenango Furnace Company, Harmar Denny, American businessman and Anti-Masonic member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Alexander M. Byers, and others.

Lincoln Avenue also became known for its mansions and lavish courtyards.

Historic Sites

With such rich history and generational wealth within Allegheny West, it is no surprise that the area is home to some fantastic historic buildings. Many of the buildings hold most of their original architectural style and complete the historic charm of Allegheny West. Some of the sites include,

Emmanuel Episcopal Church

  • The Emmanuel Episcopal Church was built in 1886 and is known for its architectural features and was one of the last designs by Henry Hobson Richardson. The building was declared a National Historic Landmark in 2000.

Byers Lyon House

  • The Byers-Lyon House was built in 1898 and is a prominent corner property in the area. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on November 19, 1974.

William Penn Snyder House

  • The William Penn Snyder House was built in 1911 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 3, 1976. Babb Inc., a brokerage firm, presently owns the building.
